Messing around with long exposures

For the last 3 and a half days I've been driving around the Fuji 5 Lakes area. Though cloudy most of the time (except for the last day I was there, of course), the scenery was still wonderful as the Fall colors are still going strong. One of the dangers of driving alone is that you're so tempted to look at the scenery and forget to pay attention to the road! Luckily, this is during the week, and there were not too many people on the road.

Since I've already taken lots of Fall shots before, I didn't focus on that this time, but rather used the time to mess around with closeup photography (not macro, since I don't have a macro lens, sadly) and with long exposures.

I recently got a 10 stop ND filter, and this was the first time I've actually tried using it. Turns out using it is easy enough – the tough part (which I guess applies to most aspects of photography) is the pre-visualization stage. It's not so easy to look at a scene, and know what will look good in LE.

I'm afraid I took a lot of rather boring shots…I'd say I have maybe a maximum of 10% (and this is me being generous to myself) "keeper" shots from my trip.

Still, it was a good experience. I learned how to use my gear a bit more, and it forced me to try and improve my visualization process (which, honestly, is still not very good – I just hope I get better with time and practice).

This was a LE shot of what I think is Shoji Lake (honestly, I drove around and around so much that my memory is already blurry in regards to what I shot and where I shot)

F16/10stop ND @ about 1min.
