Dammed somewhere in Oku hida

First time in a while that I've been able to get a solid (ie more than 5.5hrs) of sleep, and I'm feeling refreshed and ready to take on tonight's +Drink and Click™ Tokyo  get-together!  😉

The rest also gave me some time to go through my backlog of images, and I thought I'd put this one up.  Taken during the trip to Shirakawago earlier this month with +Agustin Rafael Reyes , +Jason Arney , and +Jeff Austin  , we stopped along the way to check out this nifty… reservoir..river?  It was created by a dam (whose shadow looms to the right of the picture), and was just a cool sight to see (though unfortunately I never noted the name of the dam..)

Have a good weekend all!

Purple Ninja

Just a quick shot taken while wandering the streets of Chinatown with visiting friend "M" and +Claire SK .  It was a crazily cold and windy day (like, 30kmh winds!), so the "purple ninja" (aka "PN") was wise indeed to bundle up like this :p

From a self-critiquing perspective, I do feel that the background almost overwhelms PN.  I did consider cropping a little off the top, but then I'd lose the lanterns which I felt were important to the identity of the location (ie Chinatown).   I wish I could reshoot this from a better angle… but I guess them's the breaks in street photography.

It's Friday – I am looking forward to the weekend and being able to sleep in!

Kickin' it, Holian-style

Fellow photo buddy (aka Sir Holian) and I met up last weekend to do a bit of location scouting for a photography course we're taking.  For a newbie like myself, location scouting is a little trickier than my usual shooting process because one has to get used to visualizing how a model is going to look, what locations are both visually interesting yet not too distracting, take into account the type of light available, etc.

All in all good practice, made all the more fun when in the company of a very serious photographer such as Sir Holian.  I mean, you can see how serious this guy is right?  😉

Actually, another benefit of hanging around with this dude is that I'm gradually getting used to being on the other side of the lens – I've never been very comfortable with having my picture taken, but watching this guy model so effortlessly is helping me relax a bit as well.

These were some of my favorite shots from that day.  🙂

Will her wishes be granted?

This was another shot from Meiji Jingu shrine earlier in the year.  Though it wasn't quite "Coming-of-Age day", these young ladies beat the crowds (and as it turns out, the tons of snow that fell the following day) by visiting the shrine a day in advance.

While strolling around the shrine, I caught sight of these young ladies heading towards the prayer section and so I circled around to get in front of them, hoping to get a shot of them in prayer.  Unfortunately, the crowds were so thick that they were continuously blocked until the very end when the crowds parted momentarily and I snapped this young woman as she was stepping away.  She looked so gleeful that I couldn't help but wonder what she had just prayed for – it looked like something fun though!  🙂

Fuji

I just realized that I really have not taken many images of Japan's iconic Mt. Fuji – I've climbed it multiple times, but have not really viewed it from a distance.  Hopefully I'll be able to fix that this year, starting with this shot.

This was taken with fellow 'togs +adithya anand , +Agustin Rafael Reyes , and +Jason Arney last weekend in Izu.  Big thanks especially to Jason and Agustin for planning in advance good spots to shoot from.  Also, all three were very good sports about enduring the occasional "matsuya maneuver", a special driving technique of mine that involves mixing up the left and right directions.  You should try it sometime, it does wonders for keeping one's passengers hearts thumping.

Mountain view at Okuhida by Jeff Matsuya on EyeEm

Winter view

Just a quick shot from this weekend's trip – this was taken from the Shinhotaka ropeway platform in Okuhida.  A lovely view, though a bit chilly at around -6 degrees or so.

I'm not sure if this image looks right color-wise.  I copied over my photos after I got home around midnight last night, did a little tweaking, but I was so groggy that I couldn't really focus, which is why I'm not sticking this image in an album just yet.

More to come (after I've gotten more rest…)
