Digging ditches

The first day of the volunteer work in Tohoku consisted of digging out a ditch – I never realized how back-breaking this kind of work actually is!

I wish I had taken a real "before" shot. The shot on the left is after 2 hours of work – it was actually completely blocked up, no water was coming through. The shot on the right was taken another 2 hours later, greatly extended though it's a bit hard to see off in the distance.

I haven't really done this kind of work before, and I have alot more respect for people who do this on a daily basis. Aside from being liberally spattered with mud (as you can see in other shots in this album), one of my boots actually got punctured by a metal wire almost immediately and though it luckily missed scratching open my skin, the sludge poured through and I spent the rest of the day sloshing around with a boot full of muddy crud. Good times all round 😛

I have a few more shots of Tohoku, but this will be my last one for a few days. I'm planning to head off to Miyakejima tonight. I have no real plans, and don't even know where I'm going to stay yet!

Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap place there? Just need a place to sleep at night and store my stuff during the day as I walk around (thinking something like the private 1-person room I got at Kawaguchiko for JPY4,200 per night. 🙂
