Japanese Wedding at Meiji Jingu shrine

I had the fortune of coming across a wedding procession while I was visiting Meiji Jingu shrine earlier this year, somehow managing to be in the perfect spot to catch a few shots of this lovely moment.

I haven't seen many of these Japanese-style weddings, and usually when I've seen them, it's almost always been from a distance, so I was quite happy to be able to get a little closer and catch a glimpse of this facet of Japanese culture.

Hope you enjoy them, and good night from Tokyo!  🙂

New Year Prayers

Been away from shooting lately – only 2 days into work at the office this year, but they've been a hectic couple of days.  Luckily I was able to get out and shooting a bit before work started, and this was taken at Meiji Jingu shrine on January 3rd.

It's customary for people in Japan to visit shrines and temples to pray on/around the new year holidays (from Jan. 1st to 3rd).  During this time, it gets very crowded with lines of people waiting their turn to toss in a coin, clap their hands, and bow their heads in a moment of prayer.

I joined in a quick prayer of my own as well, but I won't tell you what I prayed for as that's a secret!  😉

I wish you all the best for 2013 – may it bring us peace and joy.

Good night from Tokyo.  🙂

Snow!

Snow in Tokyo is not common – at least not in Tokyo proper. Further up north there's plenty, but in the last 10+ years I've been here, I can only recall a couple of years where there's been any significant snowfall in the city. And today was one of them.

Actually, today has been a wonky one for weather overall – first there's been rain all day long, then a 5.1 quake late this evening, then this incredible amount of snow, combined with major thunder and lightening.

Given that today's the first day of the Chinese New Year, it would seem that the dragon indeed awakens.

Danbo-kun on the other hand, just wants to get home as soon as possible!

Old friends

I was driving up to one of the landmarks on Miyakejima, the Izu lighthouse, and as I pulled up, I saw these two guys sitting on the bench looking out over the ocean. I felt a little awkward trying to grab a photo, so what I did was hold the camera over my chest and pretend to be fiddling with the settings – while instead I was snapping a couple of quick shots. I was glad I did it quickly because a few minutes later they were gone, vanishing while I was setting up the tripod to take photos in the opposite direction. I still don't know where they went to so fast because I didn't notice another car in the area.

I liked this one because I managed to catch the once-a-day ferry approaching in the frame, and I thought it added a nice a element.

Also since it's Monday… #monochromemonday 🙂

G'night all!
