These are the pictures I took today for #RollingShutterSaturday, curated by +Benno Dielmann . This is the first time I've tried participating in a "theme" day, and the first time I've tried the "rolling shutter" technique.

It was a rather fun exercise, though harder than it looks to press the shutter button while simultaneously rotating the camera/phone!

Run for the Cure 2011

I've participated in the RFTC events for the past 3 years, ever since losing a close friend to breast cancer – she wasn't even 60 years old.

For those of you in Tokyo, please participate if you can! It's always a fun day, with different events that you can sign up for (5k walk, 5k run, 10k run), plus food, performances, and raffles.
Last year I came down with a cold on the week of the run, but I still signed up (it's 5,000 JPY for adults), got my T-shirt, and spent the day taking pictures.

As you can see in the picture I took last year, it can be a fun day for people of all ages 🙂

For more information, please check out:

(I'm not a member of or affiliated with the event in any official way – I just want to spread the word)

Mystery Critter

Does anyone know what this insect is? It appears to be some form of lepidoptera (not sure why I remember that word…), though it looks and behaves much like a hummingbird.

These shots were taken last weekend when I went with my family to a bonsai festival (photos of that to be posted at a later date). We were waiting for the bus and these little critters were flying all around the nearby bushes. The photos are all cropped since I didn't have a better zoom lens at the time.. 🙁

I've seen them before so I know they're not uncommon, but I have no idea what they are – any one know? 🙂

For those of you in Japan (or visiting Japan), sounds like it will be a fun experience! (also, there are 2-day and 1-day signups available for those with time constraints)

Reshared post from +Alfie Goodrich

I am absurdly late promoting my involvement with this event but I have been rushed off my feet with work recently and have been battling a few web-server issues as well.

But, here goes. Places left, a great schedule of lessons, walks and workshops. Three days of photography teaching from three pros, including myself, for just 45,000Yen. Can't go wrong with that. Plus, there are some nice prizes to stand a chance of winning, including ten hours of one-to-one lessons from me.
